SkoBots by The STEAM Connection

Wearable robot friends for language revitalization.

Description

The STEAM Connection is a minority and youth-led charity that has reached 600k+ youths with technical education with an emphasis on language revitalization and cultural preservation. They create equitable and innovative learning solutions for Indigenous youths with robots that they design, manufacture, and give away for free.

Language is vital to preserving Indigenous cultures and identities—but they have been under attack and are at extreme risk. Our founder and inventors own language, Anishinaabemowin, is considered an endangered language.

Their work in combating language loss takes form with a robot friend called the SkoBot. SkoBots are personalized, wearable, and interactive Indigenous language revitalization robots that sense motion and speak Indigenous languages. Built to adorably take technical learning out of the classroom, the robots were made to supplement community language learning for free and the students build the robots themselves. It has been a success in enabling youth to bring the robots home to learn with their families and in creating learning tools they resonate with. The program is currently expanding to integrate more Indigenous languages from North and South American and over 150 robots have been distributed currently to Tribal schools and Indigenous youth programs.
