"[Number of native speakers] is hard to say as this is not counted in the census in Tanzania. However, according to the Wanda themselves, they live in Kamsamba ward in Momba District Council (it’s also the heartland) and Kipeta ward in Sumbawanga District. The 2012 cencus counted 17 055 people in Kamsamba ward and 25 755 people in Kipeta ward."
"Education and literacy are not available, but not for the Wanda not wanting it; it's the law in Tanzania that all official business and education is either in Swahili or English. "
Swahili
"At least half [of Wanda people speak Swahili] as education is in Swahili but their Swahili is limited, pre-school children and older people (60 and above) don’t speak it. Wanda is used as long as there are no non-Wanda speakers around. We have been told that even people from other tribes who start living among the Wanda will learn it and use it."
