Indigenous people and communities who have migrated to the US face discrimination and violations of their linguistic and human rights every day. This public forum, held on International Translation Day, September 30, 2024, highlighted the voices of grassroots Indigenous-led organizations doing the work of Indigenous language interpretation in communities around the US.
ELP’s goal in offering this forum was to provide a space for the public to have the chance to listen to those on the ground doing this work - and to create the possibility for public engagement, education, sensitization, and solidarity. The audience had the opportunity to engage with the organizers at the end of the forum.
Host @Yazmín Novelo (Endangered Languages Project) spoke with:
💬 Ernesto Ajanel, International Mayan League
💬 Arcenio Lopez, Mixteco Indígena Community Organizing Project
💬 Saul Rivera, Concejo de los Pueblos Originarios
💬 Puma Tzoc, Pueblo Unido PDX
The recording of this event is also available in Spanish.
