Teaching Yukon Native Languages: A Guidebook for Native Language Instructors

This manual was developed by the Yukon Native Language Centre (Canada) to create a comprehensive resource for teaching Native languages of the Yukon in grades Kindergarten through grade 12. The guidebook emphasizes a community-based approach to language teaching and learning to support language use in the community. It also recognizes the importance of involvement of a diversity of stakeholders (e.g., community, Nation and/or governance structure, school, etc.) in supporting language revitalization.

This manual can be used as a model and adapted to suit the needs of other Indigenous language communities. It provides a comprehensive curriculum for language teaching. Some of the sections and materials for teaching and learning include: a month by month curriculum, seasonal topics, sample conversational language lessons, detailed planning guides, activities with instructions and materials lists, classroom oral teaching methods, sample lessons/lesson plans, flashcards, gamecards, illustrations, long-range planning charts, testing information, useful classroom expressions, etc.
