Faeto and Celle di St.Vito, in the southern province of Apuilia. Outpost communities where Faetar is spoken are found at least in northern Italy,
Switzerland, Germany, Canada, and the United States. Perhaps the largest of these is in the Greater TorontoArea (hereafter Toronto), where some community members estimate there are >2,000 people from, or with ancestors from, Celle
and Faeto.

The language examined here is Faetar, an endangered Francoprovenc¸al (FP) variety spoken by fewer than 1,000 people in two mountaintop villages in
southern Italy (Apulia): Faeto and Celle di St.Vito. The contact situation between Faetar and other varieties spoken in Apulia has existed for some 700 years, since a group of Francoprovenc¸al speakers moved from a region east of Lyon, France, and founded Faeto and Celle (Nagy 1996: Chapter 3).
