42861 (as of 2000 census)
For the ethnic population - "This figure only includes the Pumi living in Yunnan Province. Due to historical reasons, Pumi living in Sichuan Province are all included in the Tibetan ethnicity. It is therefore difficult to establish a precise figure and several estimates have been made: Steven Harrell (2001) mentions 31000; Lu Shaozun (2001:1) mentions around 50000 Pumi-speaking Tibetan, of which around 34000 live in Muli Tibetan Autonomous County." (p.3)
Yongning Na; Chinese; Tibetan
"Lu (1994) mentions that an average of 36% of the Pumi people in Yunnan do not use Pumi, but have switched to Chinese or other minority language (such as Lisu and Bai). Of the ethnically Pumi Tibetans in Sichuan almost all still speak Pumi."
Ninglang County, Yunnan Province, and Sichuan Province
