A small number of children learn the language, and while the trend seemed highly alarming a few years ago, the use of Lule Saami has recently been activated to some extent. Younger speakers may nevertheless prefer Swedish or Norwegian.

Spoken in Jokkmokk County and parts of Ga¨llivare and other adjacent counties in Norrbotten Province (Lule Lappmark) in Sweden and in the Tysfjord region in northern Nordland Province in Norway.

A Lule Sámi speaker and mother interviewed in the article describes "a situation where nearly all adults in the community are bilinguals. They speak Sámi with their own age group and elders, but the language is hardly transmitted to any children."
