For most of the last century, the larger group (apparently with the hypernym Werikyana, which were the "people of Weriki", the last great chief of that century) was spread along the Rio Cachorro (Katxuyana), the Rio Trombetas (the Kahu, giving to its people the name Kahyana), and to at least two other rivers (which must logically have been named the Inkarïnï, for the Ingarïnyana, and the Txikïrï, for the Xikuyana). In 1968, so that the young people (who were too closely related to marry) could find spouses, some 40 individuals (all Katxuyana) were airlifted by the Brazilian Air Force to the Missão Tiriyó, well to the north and East of their ancestral lands, and into a completely different environment (the savannahs instead of the jungles). These 40 people were absorbed into the 900 or so people at the Missão TIriós. At that time, two brothers in their 20s (I think) decided to take their chances farther to the west, in the Nhamundá, where they presumably found spouses and built the Nhamundá villages of Cafezal and Areia. In 1997, some of the families from the Missão decided to found new villages farther downriver from the Missão, including Pedra da Onça and Santo Antônio; since then, other small groups of Katxuyana have split off from the larger and more homogenous Tiriyó population, creating another 3-4 small villages in the upper Rio Paru do Oeste. In 2002-3, another cluster of families decided to return to their traditional territory, (re-)founding two villages on the Rio Cachorro: Chapeu and Santidade.
