The language is spoken mainly by adults and has lost speakers from one generation to another.
Spoken in the basin of the Putumayo River in Amazonas, Peru (on the border with Colombia) and the Ampiyacu River in the province of Mariscal Ramón Castilla, in the department of Loreto, Peru; there are also speakers, to a lesser extent, in Colombia and Brazil.

Children who live near big mixed villages usually no longer acquire Yagua, but those that live in more isolated areas still do (Crevels 2007). Many monolingual speakers in isolated areas. All domains. Some use in religious ceremonies and services. Neutral to negative attitudes. Most along main rivers prefer children learn Spanish [spa]. Also use Spanish [spa] (2013).
