Roughly 5,600 Khatso people (2010 Chinese census); about 97% of these are speakers at some level.
Intergenerational transmission is occurring, but imperfectly. Downward trend in speaker numbers. Language is used daily in the village, but children are taught Mandarin first so they can integrate into education system; as a result, their language skills are more and more influenced by Mandarin.
