I am a Cornish person and a professional language teacher. In 2001, I established a language school in my home in Lostwithiel, Cornwall/Kernow for the teaching of the Cornish language/Kernowek, and other important, related aspects of our culture. I offer the Cornish language/Kernowek here in the context of Cornish culture, history and identity, and I offer this alongside other languages: French, English and some Italian.
My language school is entirely self-funded. I do the work because I think it is essential that there is a place within the community where people can have access to these topics on a daily, local basis. I consider it vital that the Cornish people are seen as 'on a par with the Welsh, the Scots and the Irish' and also that our Cornish language, dialect, culture, history and unique literature must be available 'on a par with' other cultures. People can come here and benefit from this all of this on a proper, professional basis and directly through the cultural lens of a Cornish woman, with all that that brings in terms of my ancestral awareness, understanding of, and attunement to, the issues relating to this unique place and its unique history. I work constantly on having one ear attuned to my ancestral voices and ancestral wisdom and another attuned to present and future needs and the challenges that we must meet.
