Comments on speakers
"We shall use the term Wapan to refer to the language itself. This is the term the Wukari Jukun themselves use for their language... Though many subjects use Hausa when speaking to non-Jukun, none interviewed use Hausa in their home compounds. For the Jukun people generally, Wapan is the only language which encompasses all aspects of their daily lives... Very few people know Hausa completely, and that less Hausa is known in those areas furthest from Wukari and off main roads... Further into the bush the level drops appreciably, so that complete communication by means of Hausa becomes very unlikely indeed."

Speakers' Attitude
"A large majority of those that were interviewed favor literacy in Wapan over any other language. Again and again the reason given is 'It's my language,' or 'I'll understand it better,' or both of these. The occasional person who favors Hausa over Wapan is a person who knows Hausa well; he values Hausa because it reaches beyond his area... This, however, is decidedly not the view of the average Wukari Jukun person. He sees Wapan as the language of his people and 'his compound, and he believes he will be able to read and understand best in Wapan..."
