Barngarla linguistic workshops

Description

During the daily trilingual program I present to young language learners, 3 1/2 years to 6 years, the endangered Indigenous language, Barngarla, a language with no native speakers, is taught in collaboration with Barngarla Community Members and Professor Ghil'ad Zuckermann.

Orthography is vital when teaching endangered Indigenous Australian languages, such as Barngarla, as it preserves pronunciation, cultural identity, and linguistic integrity.

A consistent writing system supports learners in connecting spoken language with written form, empowering communities to reclaim their voices.

In our language classes, we integrate sensory activities, like sand tracing Barngarla letters, singing word patterns, or matching images with written terms to deepen memory and engagement.

These tactile and auditory experiences bring the language to life, honouring oral traditions while building literacy.

Orthography is more than spelling; it bridges ancestral knowledge and future generations of speakers and learners.
