The French state's ban on the Breton language in schools in Brittany đŸĢ 👞 (Rozenn Milin)

Join Rozenn Milin who wrote her thesis on linguistic evolution in Brittany during the 20th century. Motivated by her own childhood experience where Breton was the only language spoken in her home between her parents and grandparents, she discusses her experience collecting testimonies and documents that highlight the measures taken by schools to ban the use of Breton and enforce French as the language of the state. Milin expands upon the “cow,” a symbol tied around the neck of children who spoke Breton, which is well known, and addresses how similar tactics were used in French colonies within Africa. But this is only one part of the pressure exerted on Breton with the aim of destroying the language.
