A common practice among Suri women is the insertion of a lip-plate. The size of a lip-plate can range anywhere from 1inch to 6inches in diameter. Due to the placement of this large object, it has a significant effect on the Suri women's speech as it interferes with one of the vocal organs. Their speech differs from that of the Suri men due to the velar consonants being substituted for the labial consonants.
