Tehuelche (Aonekko ‘a’ien) language is a Tchonic language from Patagonia that, at the time of the present documentation was known to be used by a single elderly speaker. She sadly passed away only a few months later. This collaborative project intends to add to the existing documentation by creating a repository of common conversational language used in everyday discourse, as well as community and personal histories. The collected discourse has been documented due to its relevance for the community’s purpose of reclaiming the language and its functional usage in their lives. The collection is the only work on this language that is thought to be based on its real communicative uses. It seeks to be an example of a collaborative approach, with the focus on a future language recovery. This documentation is a collection of invented situations that are used as triggers for different linguistic uses. It is intended to be a primary source for producing teaching materials. The project uses ethnographic methods together with techniques in language didactics and linguistic documentation. It is a very particular case of fieldwork in linguistics since it is done together with a single speaker. The result is an eclectic collection, often funny and very particular since traditional elicitation simply did not work. Despite consuming much more time and more effort than more traditional methods, this was probably the only way to work in a particular situation where there was only one person who could use the language. The moments of effective use of the Aonekko 'a'ien are actually very few with respect to Spanish. Few dialogues are entirely in that language, due to the particular communicative conditions. The examples, however, show that the use of code-switching is a valid linguistic practice. By privileging the daily interaction with the speaker, the language reveals a surprising resistance and adaptability.
