The alphabet in Spirit Mountain: An Anthology of Yuman Story and Song was not formally recognized or utilized by the Maricopas of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) or Gila River Indian Community(GRIC) at the time of publication. The GRIC has never developed a standard Maricopa writing system for community use. The SRPMIC has since developed a standard Maricopa writing that is nearly identical to this one. The only difference is that the voiced dental is represented with a /d/ instead of /th/. The /th/ is used for an unvoiced dental.
